The Greatest Gift
The Season of Pentecost
Prelude
Brian Turner
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
UMH 384
Words: Charles Wesley  Music: John Zundel
TUNE: BEECHER

Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of Heaven, to earth come down;
Fix in us thy humble dwelling;
All thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love thou art;
Visit us with thy salvation;
Enter every trembling heart

Special Music

In Christ Alone
Bryan and Katie Torwalt
arranged by Joel Mott

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.
Prayer
   Prayer of Saint Thomas Aquinas

Give us, O Lord, steadfast hearts, which no unworthy thought can drag downward, unconquered hearts, which no tribulation can wear out, upright hearts, which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside. Bestow upon us also, O Lord our God, understanding to know you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, and a faithfulness that we may finally embrace you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Scripture
1 Corinthians 13 NIV

13 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love
The Greatest Gift

The Apostle Paul had been writing about spiritual gifts and the body of Christ when he comes to this chapter. I Corinthians 13 begins with “and I will show you the most excellent way”. We often hear this scripture read at weddings as a sure foundation for a couple beginning their married lives. It’s a gift that is greatly needed today! It continues to be the best indication of our genuine and authentic faith in Christ. Loving God and loving neighbor can still change the world.

The Gift of Love
English Folk Tune Arr. by HAL HOPSON

Though I may speak with bravest fire, And have the gift to all inspire, And have not love, my words are vain, As sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess, And striving so my love profess, But not be given by love within, The profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control, Our spirits long to be made whole. Let inward love guide every deed; By this we worship, and are freed! Amen.

Postlude
Brian Turner
For the Beauty of the Earth
arr. by Fink

For the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies;
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise.

May God's love
burn so brightly in your
heart that
others
feel
 its warmth!

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27 NLT
