What Does The Lord Require
UMH 441
Words: Albert Bayly  Music: Erik Routley
SHARPTHORNE

1. What does the Lord require
for praise and offering?
What sacrifice desire,
or tribute bid you bring?
Do justly; love mercy;
walk humbly with your God.

2. Rulers of earth, give ear!
Should you not justice know?
Will God your pleading hear,
while crime and cruelty grow?
Do justly; love mercy;
walk humbly with your God.

3. All who gain wealth by trade,
for whom the worker toils,
think not to win God's aid
if greed your commerce soils.
Do justly; love mercy;
walk humbly with your God.

4. How shall my soul fulfill
God's law so hard and high?
Let Christ endue our will
with grace to fortify.
Then justly, in mercy
we'll humbly walk with God.
Prayer: Concerning the Scriptures
Blessed Lord, you have caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our  Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever, Amen.

Scripture
Micah 6: 1-8  NIV
The Lord’s Case Against Israel

6 Listen to what the Lord says:
“Stand up, plead my case before the mountains;
    let the hills hear what you have to say.
2 “Hear, you mountains, the Lord’s accusation;
    listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth.
For the Lord has a case against his people;
    he is lodging a charge against Israel.
3 “My people, what have I done to you?
    How have I burdened you? Answer me.
4 I brought you up out of Egypt
    and redeemed you from the land of slavery.
I sent Moses to lead you,
    also Aaron and Miriam.
5 My people, remember
    what Balak king of Moab plotted
    and what Balaam son of Beor answered.
Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal,
    that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord.”
6 With what shall I come before the Lord
    and bow down before the exalted God?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
    with calves a year old?
7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
    with ten thousand rivers of olive oil?
Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,
    the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
    And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
    and to walk humbly with your God.

What Does God Require?
The prophet Micah gives a succinct answer to the question “What Does Require?” The answer is found in Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O mortal what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” What would it look like if you took these three actions to heart and put them into practice? What would happen if a community took these three actions to heart and put them into practice? Surely it would result in quite a transformation of God’s love in action. God’s mercy and compassion would be touching lives and bringing hope to the disheartened. Would you be willing to take God’s requirements to heart and put them into practice this week? I believe it can have a transforming power for us and those in our community when we do.

A Living Prayer
By: Ron Block

In This World, I Walk Alone
With No Place To Call My Home.
But There's One Who Holds My Hand,
On The Rugged Road Through Barren Lands.

The Way Is Dark, The Road Is Steep.
But He's Become My Eyes To See.
Strength To Climb, My Grief To Bear,
The Savior Lives Inside Me There.

In Your Love I Find Release,
A Haven From My Unbelief.
Take My Life And Let Me Be
A Living Prayer, My God To Thee.

Through These Trials Of Life I Find
Another Voice Inside My Mind.
It Comforts Me And Bids Me Live
Inside The Love The Father Gives.

In Your Love I Find Release,
A Haven From My Unbelief.
Take My Life And Let Me Be
A Living Prayer, My God To Thee.

Take My Life And Let Me Be
A Living Prayer, My God To Thee.

Three Things God Requires - Act Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly with Him
Postlude
Brian Turner

Out Of The Depths I Cried For You
We bless you, God of Seed and Harvest
And we bless each other
that the beauty of this world
and the love that created it
might be expressed though our lives
and be a blessing to others
Now and always
